Hi Kristi, We had a situation where our cabinet installer nearly justified a cabinet to the left when we had plenty of room, only to quickly discover that the door would not open to 90 degrees & the drawer above would not open due to hitting the door trim. At this point, it really would have been nice to have a planer. Thanks again. As I understood what Kristi wrote, she is now taking the whole vanity & counter out, now that she knows the height after building the vanity & butcher block for that reason (to establish height), to put in wainscoting that will also act as backsplash.
About: I am a self taught maker that has fallen in love with making instead of buying. The tops needed more protection than the bottom. I started by sealing the bottoms and sides with two coats of the Waterlox Original, letting them dry for 24 hours in between coats.

This was really helpful! I did give instructions for the new finish. Those look great. The remaining 3 feet will be cut down to size later and used as a countertop in the linen storage area. There are a few small dents here and there, but hardly noticeable. Using a handsaw, cut strips of -inch plywood to fit 2 inches shorter than the depth of the cabinets. Lastly, all of this, plus (not to speak for her), because shes made this as a furniture piece vanity, it can be floated in the room and theres no need for it to be completely flush to the wall, because its not a fitted piece. Now I use Rust-Oleum wood stain exclusively. Ive been looking for tutorials on this because I want to do the same thing! That is looking beautiful! Im off to a good start, but its far from finished. Make sure your counters are in place and then take your remaining screws and screw the counter tops in place.

I was hoping mine would turn out looking like actual butcherblock (which it didnt really since I stained it so dark) and butcherblock is generally made up of pieces that are narrower in width. Make sure before installing your counters you take the time to properly seal and finish them.
Will you use some kind of wood conditioner to insure the stain will soak in evenly? (Make sure the screw is shorter than the counter is thick.). We just dont let raw food touch the counter tops. In that case, it would probably be preferable to leave the building of the counters to the professional rather than build a DIY wood countertop. It didnt need to be perfect since I would be doing lots of sanding, but I didnt want to end up with any really significant height differences from board to board because that would just require even more sanding. To create a waterproof seal around the sink we also used clear silicone. Our butcher block countertops are made with thick veneer wood, combining old craftsmanship with modern manufacturing methods.

If I made a countertop out of those with the rounded edges, Id be sanding for days (or using an obscene amount of wood filler) in order to get a flat surface. Using a drill/driver fitted with a -inch bit, drill angled pilot holes, about -inch away from the edges, that go through the top of the blocking and out the cut ends. Thats exactly what I was going to say. It is fun to watch you do your thing. As a side note, 2x3s arent used as structural meaning load bearing. I'd definitely not recommend it, and I wish I'd invested in a better one before this project. Don't worry if the strip isn't square to the side wall; it's more important that it's parallel to the cabinet front.

Cozy things up with rich-looking butcher block. Looks great, why not use wider pine 2xs? But because of the way part of it will wrap around and act as a backsplash for the vanity, the wainscoting has to be installed before I can install the vanity. It took a couple of hours for it to dry, and then I used 150-grit sandpaper on my sander to smooth everything out. This helps to even out the color and create a much more even stain coat. Once I determined the order in which I wanted the boards, I flipped the boards over because I would be working on the bottom side of the countertop to put it together. I do leave electrical and plumbing to the pros but everything else is MINE! But they had hard water, and any water left to evaporate on the counter left a white mark. Most people (especially the pros) would use a circular saw to cut the straight sides, but I learned the hard way, while building my fireplace, that Im not good at using a circular saw when I have to cut an area out of the middle of a piece of wood or MDF. Use it to adjust the strip of cardboard so it overhangs the cabinets by the correct amount while pushed against the side wall. I pre-drilled the holes and then screwed one side to the cabinet base and then one side to the countertop. So before we get started lets make sure you read up on how I finished these countertops with spar varnish to protect it from water, warping and stains. For us working in the kitchen seemed to be the best option with weather. Using a lint-free rag, liberally apply mineral oil to the top of the butcher block.
