I created my own and I found amazing tools that could be used year after year. I like using individual student coin banks. Many of you may be wondering why I prefer unifix cubes to base ten blocks. While I like base-ten blocks for third grade, I dont typically introduce them in second grade. I found that I needed to do some serious scrubbing on a regular basis.
Teach lessons and have children practice sorting coins, ordering coins by size and quantity, and creating different amounts. Using a large storage area that holds bins for those types you use often is helpful. My FAVORITE way to introduce kids to the hundred chart is, drumroll please, with unifix cubes! Teachers would benefit froma set of jumbo playing cards to use for lessons and demonstrations as they provide a significant visual for kids. This form collects information I will use to send weekly emails with strategies, promotions, and resources. They are also great for teaching beginning addition and subtraction (i.e., I have five bears, and I take one bear away). I use math manipulatives for almost every math lesson I teach. Teachers know that Place value blocks are beneficial in teaching counting, number concepts, double-digit addition, and subtraction. Try these foam ones for a math center. Every set of 10 has a unique color. Pairing this second grade math manipulative with our math centers has helped my students solidify their understanding of time.

I like to encourage students to explore with a bin of rodsand see what they come up with. There are many types of math manipulatives available to teachers.
