Remember test patches are your friend :). Large projects like a piece of furniture, a wall, or a floor require mixing very large batches. Im not a fan of the golden oak. Lighter floors can be better for small dark rooms as they will brighten them up, making them look bigger because they reflect light. Try teak oil or danish oil. The other option is to stain the entire floor dark and try to blend it in. Best bet would be to get some samples of each so you can see for yourself. I have just had my cypress pine floors sanded and stained walnut by a professional company and there are marks along the edge of the boards where the stain has not fixed, leaving very light marks. Applied evenly, they will add a uniform color coat that floats atop the wood. Otherwise something like Heritage Brown or Provincial (maybe a 50% mix with Natural) would be a good place to start. You could also try colors like Provincial and Special Walnut to lighten and lift the color a bit but still retain the coffee brown tone youre after. However, apply several layers of stain, and each one adds color while combining with what is below. The color is a mix of Rosewood and Natural 50% of each. I like the idea of the same coloured border in the living room to tie in the stairs, especially if it has a built in border already. To fix it youll need to allow sufficient time for the stain in the gaps to dry and then start over. This makes sense and trying out different stain colors can be fun. This is a very individual choice and a lot will depend on the style of your house, furniture etc. We have maple flooring, or at least my husband thinks so.. Will it look okay if we go with a very dark floor stain? Mostly tiger oak and some mahogony pieces and I dont want the floor to be matchy, but rather complement these pieces and our style. Hello! Those plain sawn red oak floors were stained with 50% Rosewood/Natural and then finished with 3 coats of oil based finish to give it a nice deep, rich look. Sorry, I missed your comment.
