A torrential downpour the night before had led to a slippery and muddy trail, one that was getting muddier by the minutehopeful that the rain would stop eventually, we continued toward the waterfall.

A torrential downpour the night before had led to a slippery and muddy trail, one that was getting muddier by the minutehopeful that the rain would stop eventually, we continued toward the waterfall.

Up to this point, the trail, although muddy, had been easy to hike thanks to the flat grade, but reaching the base of the waterfall required a relatively steep cliffside descent down a rain soaked pathan intimidating prospect when you could see that a massive landslide had recently occurred on the opposite bank of the Danta River. Rain was saturating the air and the surrounding forest when Pick and I began our hike, the moisture creating a dark and somewhat gloomy atmospherecomplete with lush tropical ferns and palms drooping under the weight of water-laden limbs.
It didnt take us more than 20 minutes to walk there. Arenal Volcano National Park in Costa Rica contains a number of fantastic hikes for tourists, both in, and around the park. I kept looking around and gazing at the nature surrounding me.

Even though Cerro Chato is a great hike, views of Arenal Volcano are obscured from it, due to the extensive coverage from primary tropical forest in the region.
You can tell the place is a bit older but they have done a good job taking care of it while keeping a rugged wilderness feel.
